May Update

So 7 weeks of this whole parenting stuff has passed. Who knew it would be so involved? Nahh, just kidding…I think.

Anyways, life is good. Simon is literally growing like a weed. He has grown over 10cms and put on over 2 pounds. Now, I won’t try and claim to be any kind of baby expert, but that sounds like a lot to me. He has also started to take notice of things around him, and even started to smile. We’re fairly confident that the smile is a sign of relief from farts, pees, or special “surprises”.

Dee is recovering well, and has started to ride her bike on the wind trainer while Simon sleeps. We even ventured out on our first commuter bike ride today. The hardest part about the whole bike ride for her was not the physical activity, but rather trying to get her butt comfortable on the bike seat again. It has been so long out of the saddle now that the ol’ butt bones aren’t use to it.

My life has been a wreck as of late, but not as a result from anything that Simon has done (or not done). I have pulled a toe nail off, exploded a bike tire beside my ear, and slipped a disk in my back. Most of it seems to be a sign of my own stupidity (toe and explosion), and the back is reoccurring. I refuse to admit that any of it is a sign of ageing. Outside of my own personal misfortune, life has been good. While I have been spending more time at home than usual, as a direct result of the family man I found within me, I have also been fortunate enough to get out on a few bike rides a week, maybe throw in a run and a swim here and there, and last weekend a group of us ventured out to the Granby River near Grand Forks for the day. I’d never paddled that river before, and it proved to be an exciting mixture of pool drops and boulder gardens. It would have been nice to have a little more water in there, but all in all it was a great day. I was impressed with my shoulder as well. This was really the first test that I have challenged it with since I separated it in the fall. It felt strong, and I only had a little pain at the end of the day, and I can’t be sure that wasn’t a result of hitting a rock.
